Connected Passed Pawns Protection

Core Lesson Objective: Discover how connected passed pawns defend themselves against an enemy king. While the pawns prevent the enemy king from capturing them, your king walks up to secure the win.

Connected Passed Pawns Protection

Position 1 / 1
Position 1/1 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Welcome to Lesson 6! Connected passed pawns are incredibly powerful. Even without their king nearby, they can defend themselves against capture: if the enemy king attacks the trailing pawn, the leading pawn advances. This protects the pair while your king walks up to assist!

Mainline (23 Moves)

Move 1 / 23 1. e5

1. e5. White advances the e-pawn, creating connected passed pawns. Notice that Black's king on d7 is inside the square of either pawn if they ran alone, but they will work together!

Move 2 / 23 1... Ke6

1... Ke6. Black moves the king to attack both pawns simultaneously.

Move 3 / 23 2. Kg2

2. Kg2! Since the pawns are safe (if Black captures the trailing d4 pawn, the e5 pawn runs and promotes), White starts marching the king up from h1 immediately!

Move 4 / 23 2... Kd5

2... Kd5. Black attacks the d4 pawn, hoping White will play defensively. But White's king is coming.

Move 5 / 23 3. Kf3

3. Kf3. White's king protects the d4 pawn, securing the structure.

Move 6 / 23 3... Kc6

3... Kc6. Black shuffles the king, unable to penetrate.

Move 7 / 23 4. Ke4

4. Ke4. White's king reaches the center, fully supporting the pawns.

Move 8 / 23 4... Kc7

4... Kc7. Black is forced to shuffle.

Move 9 / 23 5. e6

5. e6. White brings up the trailing e-pawn to the 6th rank.

Move 10 / 23 5... Kd8

5... Kd8. Black retreats.

Move 11 / 23 6. d5

6. d5. White advances the d-pawn. The pawns are connected again on the 5th and 6th ranks.

Move 12 / 23 6... Ke7

6... Ke7. Black blockades.

Move 13 / 23 7. Ke5

7. Ke5. White's king steps up to support the pawns.

Move 14 / 23 7... Kd8

7... Kd8. Black retreats.

Move 15 / 23 8. d6

8. d6. White advances the d-pawn.

Move 16 / 23 8... Ke8

8... Ke8. Black blockades.

Move 17 / 23 9. d7+

9. d7+. White checks the king, forcing it to retreat.

Move 18 / 23 9... Kd8

9... Kd8. Black is forced to d8.

Move 19 / 23 10. Kf6

10. Kf6. White's king steps up to support the pawns.

Move 20 / 23 10... Kc7

10... Kc7. Black is forced to step aside.

Move 21 / 23 11. e7

11. e7. White advances the e-pawn.

Move 22 / 23 11... Kb7

11... Kb7. Black steps away.

Move 23 / 23 12. e8=Q

12. e8=Q. White promotes to a Queen and wins easily! The pawns defended themselves until the king arrived to secure the win.

Alternative Path Available — Consider: 2. d5+? (Pawn Push Blunder) instead of 2. Kg2

Alt Step 1 / 6 2. d5

White blunders with 2. d5+?, pushing the pawn too early without king support.

Alt Step 2 / 6 2... Kxd5

Black captures the trailing pawn with 2... Kxd5!.

Alt Step 3 / 6 3. e6

White attempts to run the remaining pawn with 3. e6.

Alt Step 4 / 6 3... Kd6

Black plays the precise blockading move 3... Kd6!, stopping the pawn in its tracks.

Alt Step 5 / 6 4. e7

White pushes 4. e7, hoping to promote.

Alt Step 6 / 6 4... Kxe7

Black captures the pawn with 4... Kxe7! and secures an immediate draw.
