Core Lesson Objective: A passed pawn acts as a magnetic anchor to shackle the enemy king while your own king conquers the opposite flank.

The Two-Wing Decoy Magnet

Position 1 / 1
Position 1/1 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Black's king is stationed on the d8-square, solely dedicated to preventing White's c6-pawn from promoting. Notice the two-wing dynamic: White has an advanced passer on the queenside, while both sides have pawns on the flank. Golden Rule: A passed pawn is a decoy magnet—its job is to hold the enemy king hostage while your king raids the opposite flank. #1 Critical Trap: Stepping into the blockade with 1. Kd5?! (played by 11.8% of human players) relieves pressure and lets Black's king blockade on c7 with a dead draw! Instead, White plays 1. Kc5!, stepping around the decoy pawn to conquer Black's queenside pawns on b4 and a5. The c6-pawn will later be sacrificed as a distraction once White's king creates unstoppable outside passers. • Statistical Impact: In competitive games at the 1400-1599 rating band that reached a decisive crossroad governed by this concept, players who successfully executed this technique went on to win the match in 75.6% of games.

White invades with 2. Kb5!, immediately attacking Black's loose pawns while Black's king remains glued to c7.

Black pushes 2... g5 on the kingside, searching desperately for counter-threats.

Move 5 / 10 42. g4

Move 6 / 10 42... a4

Black plays 3... h6, maintaining pawn structure while waiting helplessly.

Move 7 / 10 43. Kxa4

White plays 4. h3, a crisp waiting move that preserves total control over the kingside.

Move 8 / 10 43... b3

Black pushes 4... a4 in a desperate bid to distract White's monarch.

Move 9 / 10 44. axb3

Alternative Path Available — Consider: Played in the Game: Kd5?!

Alt Step 1 / 1 40. Kd5

The Human Blindspot & Tempting Reflex: 11.8% of human players instinctively push the king forward with 1. Kd5?!, assuming centralization is always best.
