Core Lesson Objective: When holding an advanced passed pawn, scan the enemy king's flight squares: an anchor pawn on the rim fixes weaknesses and sets up decisive skewers.

The Anchor Pawn & The Decoy Passer

Position 1 / 1
Position 1/1 • Starting Position (White to Move)
In this endgame, White's ultimate goal is simple: promote the passed pawn into a Queen. But look at the practical challenge: White's own rook is currently occupying the a8-promotion square. To queen the pawn, White must clear the a8-square without letting Black's a2-rook safely eliminate the passer. To solve this, a player must scan the board for tactical tools that can help force the pawn through. In this specific position, the tool that works is a skewer, made possible because White's anchor pawn on h6 permanently locks Black's h7-pawn and denies the g7-flight square to Black's king on f7. White's winning system: 1. Push 1. a7! to the doorstep of queening; 2. Swing the rook to 2. Rh8! to vacate the a8-square and force the pawn through. The skewer tool does its job: if Black tries to stop the promotion with 2... Rxa7?, White unleashes 3. Rxh7+!, winning Black's rook because the h6-anchor pawn seals the king's escape. If Black doesn't take, the pawn simply queens next move! Golden Rule: Keep your focus on the primary goal—promoting the passed pawn. Tactical motifs like skewers or deflections are situational tools you scan for to help force that promotion through. #1 Critical Trap: Panicking with 1. Ra7+?! (played by 23.3% of players) trades rooks prematurely, throwing away the win into a lost pawn race.

Mainline (7 Moves)

Move 1 / 7 39. a7

1. a7! pushes the passed pawn to the doorstep of queening. Now White only needs to clear the a8-square to crown a new queen.

Move 2 / 7 39... f4

Black pushes 1... f4, desperately trying to create counterplay with central pawns. But White's promotion plan takes complete priority.

Move 3 / 7 40. Rh8

2. Rh8! clears the a8-square so the pawn can queen! Here the skewer tool proves decisive: if Black plays 2... Rxa7? to stop the promotion, White unleashes 3. Rxh7+! Ke8 4. Rxa7, winning the rook because the h6-anchor pawn seals g7. If Black refuses to take, the pawn queens next move!

Move 4 / 7 40... e3

Seeing that 2... Rxa7? walks into the skewer, Black cannot touch the pawn and desperately pushes 2... e3 to distract White.

Move 5 / 7 41. fxe3

White calmly captures with 3. fxe3, neutralizing Black's counter-break while maintaining the unstoppable queening threat on a8.

Move 6 / 7 41... fxe3

Black recaptures with 3... fxe3, but has no way to prevent White from promoting.

Move 7 / 7 42. a8=Q

Mission accomplished: White crowns the queen with 4. a8=Q!, completing the conversion of the passed pawn with an effortless theoretical win.

Alternative Path Available — Consider: Played in the Game: Ra7+?!

Alt Step 1 / 1 39. Ra7+

The Human Blindspot & Tempting Reflex: Seeing Black's dangerous passed pawn on d2, 23.3% of human players panic and play the impulsive check 1. Ra7+?!, hoping to trade rooks and simplify.
