Core Lesson Objective: Learn how White wins by getting the king ahead of the pawn on rank 5, using a Pawn Waiting Move (no check) to force Black to yield, and Outflanking to the key 6th-rank square.

Key Squares & Outflanking

Position 1 / 1
Position 1/1 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Welcome to Lesson 3: Key Squares & Outflanking! Now we see how White overcomes Black's defensive rules. White's king leads on rank 5, uses a Pawn Waiting Move (no check) to break Black's opposition, and outflanks to the 6th rank key square.

Mainline (17 Moves)

Move 1 / 17 1. Kd5

White leads with 1. Kd5, establishing the king on the 5th rank in front of the pawn.

Move 2 / 17 1... Kd7

Black applies Golden Rule 2 (Direct Opposition) with 1... Kd7.

Move 3 / 17 2. e4

White plays 2. e4! THE PAWN WAITING MOVE. Because the pawn advances WITHOUT check, Black receives no relief and is forced to yield opposition!

Move 4 / 17 2... Ke7

Black is forced to step sideways with 2... Ke7.

Move 5 / 17 3. Ke5

White plays 3. Ke5! RE-OPPOSITION. White claims opposition on e5 while keeping the e4 pawn defended, forcing Black to pick a side.

Move 6 / 17 3... Kd7

Black yields the left side with 3... Kd7.

Move 7 / 17 4. Kf6

White plays 4. Kf6! THE FLANK. Now that Black has stepped left, White outflanks right to occupy the key 6th-rank square f6! Once White lands on the 6th rank ahead of the pawn, promotion is 100% forced.

Move 8 / 17 4... Ke8

Black retreats to 4... Ke8, attempting to guard e8.

Move 9 / 17 5. e5

White pushes 5. e5! The pawn advances safely behind the king without check.

Move 10 / 17 5... Kd8

Black steps to 5... Kd8.

Move 11 / 17 6. e6

White pushes 6. e6. The pawn advances under the direct protection of the f6 king.

Move 12 / 17 6... Ke8

Black retreats to 6... Ke8.

Move 13 / 17 7. e7

White plays 7. e7! Pushing the pawn to rank 7 WITHOUT check forces Black's king off the promotion square!

Move 14 / 17 7... Kd7

Black is forced to yield e8 with 7... Kf7.

Move 15 / 17 8. Kf7

White plays 8. Kd7! Sealing absolute control of e8.

Move 16 / 17 8... Kd6

Black steps away with 8... Kg7.

Move 17 / 17 9. e8=Q

White plays 9. e8=Q! The pawn promotes to a Queen. Victory through the Pawn Waiting Move and Outflanking!

Alternative Path Available — Consider: 3... Kf7 (Yielding to the Right) instead of 3... Kd7

Alt Step 1 / 4 3... Kf7

Black yields to the right with 3... Kf7.

Alt Step 2 / 4 4. Kd6

White outflanks to the left key square with 4. Kd6! White controls e7, f7, and g7.

Alt Step 3 / 4 4... Ke8

Black is forced to retreat 4... Ke8.

Alt Step 4 / 4 5. Ke6

White pushes 5. e7! Black's king must step to f7, allowing White's king to control e8 and promote the pawn.

🛡️ Editorial & Verification Standard
