Introductory Mate-in-One Patterns

Core Lesson Objective: A Mate-in-One occurs when you can deliver checkmate in a single move. In this lesson, study the three most common introductory mate-in-one checkmate patterns: Back-Rank Mate, Scholar's Mate, and Smothered Mate.

1. Back-Rank Mate

Position 1 / 3
Position 1/3 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Look at the black King's position. It is trapped on the back rank behind a wall of its own pawns. Find the single move that delivers checkmate.

Mainline (1 Moves)

Move 1 / 1 1. Rd8#

Yes! White plays 1. Rd8# delivering a back-rank mate. The black King has no escape squares.

2. Scholar's Mate

Position 2 / 3
Position 2/3 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Both the White Queen and Bishop are attacking the weak f7-pawn. Since the King is the only piece protecting it, look for a way to deliver checkmate.

Mainline (1 Moves)

Move 1 / 1 4. Qxf7#

Perfect! White plays 1. Qxf7# for a quick Scholar's Mate. The queen is guarded by the c4-Bishop, so the King cannot capture it.

3. Smothered Mate

Position 3 / 3
Position 3/3 • Starting Position (White to Move)
The black King is completely enclosed (smothered) by its own pieces. Look for a minor piece that can jump over the wall and deliver checkmate.

Mainline (1 Moves)

Move 1 / 1 1. Nf7#

Superb! White plays 1. Nf7# to deliver a classic Smothered Mate. The King is trapped in the corner by its own rook and pawns.
