Endgame: Defensive Piece Sacrifice
Core Lesson Objective: The Golden Rule: If you are losing, look for a tactical opportunity to sacrifice your remaining minor piece for your opponent's last non-rook pawn, forcing a drawn Rook Pawn ending.
Endgame: Defensive Piece Sacrifice
Position 1 / 1Mainline (6 Moves)
Black plays 1... Bxf5+! sacrificing the Bishop to eliminate White's only helper piece.
White must recapture with 2. Kxf5. The Knight is gone, leaving White with only the h6 rook pawn.
Black plays 2... Kg8, rushing to get in front of the pawn.
White tries to squeeze Black out with 3. Kg6.
Black King plays 3... Kh8, tucking safely into the corner square.
White plays 4. h7, resulting in stalemate! The defensive sacrifice secured the draw.
Alternative Path Available — Consider: Played in the Game: Bc2?!
Black plays 1... Bc2?, trying to save the Bishop instead of sacrificing it.
White plays 2. Kg5, bringing the King forward to support the passed pawn.
Black plays 2... Kg8, trying to establish a blockade in the corner.
White checks with 3. Ne7+, forcing the Black King to make a decision.
Black plays 3... Kf7, attacking the Knight.
White plays 4. Ng6!, a brilliant blocking move. The Knight shields the h6-pawn from the Bishop. If Black captures with 4... Bxg6, White recaptures with 5. hxg6+, winning easily.
