Power of Piece Values

Core Lesson Objective: Learn the point values of all chess pieces (Pawns, Knights, Bishops, Rooks, Queens, and Kings) and how to evaluate trades.

1. The Foot Soldiers (Pawns - 1 Point)

Position 1 / 5
Position 1/5 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Welcome to The Power of Piece Values! 🧮 To make smart decisions, you must know what your pieces are worth. Pawns are worth 1 point. In this position, Black's pawn on d5 is defended by their pawn on e6. But we have two pawns attacking d5! Let's overload the defense and win two pawns for one of ours. Capture on d5 with our c-pawn!

Mainline (3 Moves)

Move 1 / 3 1. cxd5

Good job! You captured on d5. Black's e6-pawn recaptures on d5. Now capture that pawn again with our e-pawn!

Move 2 / 3 1... exd5

Now capture the remaining pawn on d5 with our e-pawn to win the trade!

Move 3 / 3 2. exd5

Excellent! By having two attackers against one defender, we traded one pawn to win two of theirs. You are now up 1 net point!

2. The Minor Pieces (Knights & Bishops - 3 Points)

Position 2 / 5
Position 2/5 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Knights and Bishops are called minor pieces, and both are worth 3 points. In this position, our Knight on d4 is attacking Black's Bishop on c6. Capture the Bishop to make an equal trade!

Mainline (1 Moves)

Move 1 / 1 1. Nxc6

Well done! Capturing the Bishop with Nxc6 is an equal trade. Although Black's b7-pawn will capture our Knight back, we traded 3 points for 3 points, which is a fair and equal exchange.

3. The Rook (5 Points)

Position 3 / 5
Position 3/5 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Rooks are heavy artillery and are worth 5 points. In this position, Black's Bishop on d6 (3 points) is completely undefended (hanging). Capture the Bishop with our Rook to gain material!

Mainline (1 Moves)

Move 1 / 1 1. Rxd6

Excellent capture! Since the Bishop was undefended, we won 3 points for free. Capturing undefended pieces is the simplest way to get ahead in chess.

4. The VIP (King - Infinite Value)

Position 4 / 5
Position 4/5 • Starting Position (White to Move)
The King is the most important piece on the board. It has no numeric point value because it can never be captured or traded! If your King is trapped in checkmate, the game ends. Keeping your King safe is the absolute most important rule in chess.

5. The Queen (9 Points)

Position 5 / 5
Position 5/5 • Starting Position (White to Move)
The Queen is the most powerful piece on the board, worth 9 points. In this position, the Black Rook on d6 (5 points) is undefended. Find a check that simultaneously attacks the Rook on d6!

Mainline (3 Moves)

Move 1 / 3 1. Qe5+

Superb check! By playing Qe5+, we check the King on h8 and attack the Rook on d6 at the same time. The Black King is forced to step away to g8.

Move 2 / 3 1... Kg8

The King has stepped to g8. Now capture the undefended Rook on d6!

Move 3 / 3 2. Qxd6

Excellent capture! We won a full Rook (5 points) for free using a Queen fork, while keeping our powerful Queen completely safe.

Alternative Path Available — Consider: Played in the Game: Qh4+?!

Alt Step 1 / 2 1. Qh4+

White plays 1. Qh4+, checking the Black King. However, this check does not attack the Rook on d6.

Alt Step 2 / 2 1... Kg7

Black simply steps their King to g7, escaping the check while their Rook remains completely safe.
