How the Pieces Move & The Goal of Chess

D
David Phillips
Founder & Lead Architect, EloClarity

Core Lesson Objective: Golden Rule: The goal of chess is to trap the enemy King in 'Checkmate' (no escape). You never capture the King! Learn the rules of Check, escape tactics (CPR), Stalametes, and the Chess Clock.

1. The Pawn's Promotion Quest

Position 1 / 10
Position 1/10 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Meet the Pawn—our brave foot soldier. It marches forward 1 square at a time. Push it to the last rank to transform (promote) it into a Queen!

Mainline (1 Moves)

Move 1 / 1 1. e8=Q

Boom! The Pawn reaches the end and promotes to a Queen! The Queen is a superhero who can slide in any straight or diagonal direction.

2. The Pawn's Diagonal Capture

Position 2 / 10
Position 2/10 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Pawns move forward, but they capture diagonally! See their movement and diagonal capture options highlighted on the board.

Mainline (1 Moves)

Move 1 / 1 1. exd3

White captures the black pawn diagonally on d3, demonstrating how the pawn attacks.

3. Straight vs. Diagonal (Rook & Bishop)

Position 3 / 10
Position 3/10 • Starting Position (White to Move)
The Rook on d4 is like a laser cannon. It controls the entire rank and file (highlighted). White slides the Rook down to h4!

Mainline (3 Moves)

Move 1 / 3 1. Rh4

White plays 1. Rh4, sliding the Rook long-range. Black King steps to d7.

Move 2 / 3 1... Kd7

The Bishop on e3 is a diagonal sniper. It controls matching color diagonals (highlighted). Slide the Bishop to f4!

Move 3 / 3 2. Bf4

Beautiful! White slides the Bishop to f4, controlling the key diagonals.

4. Superhero & VIP (Queen & King)

Position 4 / 10
Position 4/10 • Starting Position (White to Move)
The Queen is a superhero—she combines the Rook and Bishop's powers to control almost the entire board (highlighted)! Slide the Queen to a7!

Mainline (3 Moves)

Move 1 / 3 1. Qa7

Black responds with 1... Kd8.

Move 2 / 3 1... Kd8

The King on e1 is the VIP. He can only move 1 step in any direction to stay safe (highlighted). Slide the King to e2!

Move 3 / 3 2. Ke2

Excellent! White tucks the King safely on e2.

5. The Bouncy Horse (Knight)

Position 5 / 10
Position 5/10 • Starting Position (White to Move)
The Knight is a bouncy horse. In the center, it can hop to any of the 8 highlighted squares in an 'L' shape—even jumping over other pieces!

Mainline (1 Moves)

Move 1 / 1 1. Nc6

White plays 1. Nc6, leaping to its new outpost in a clean 'L' shape.

6. Check & Escape (CPR)

Position 6 / 10
Position 6/10 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Check means the enemy King is under direct attack. The defender must react immediately! Remember CPR to escape check: Capture the attacker, Protect (block) the line of check, or Run to a safe square. Slide the Rook to h8 to give Check!

Mainline (2 Moves)

Move 1 / 2 1. Rh8+

White plays 1. Rh8+, giving Check! Black has no piece to capture or block, so they must Run: Black King steps to d7.

Move 2 / 2 1... Kd7

Black King steps out of the check to d7.

7. The Goal: Checkmate

Position 7 / 10
Position 7/10 • Starting Position (Black to Move)
Checkmate! The Black King is in check by the Queen on e7, and has no way to escape: cannot capture the Queen (protected by the King), cannot block, and cannot run (all surrounding squares are attacked). White wins!

Mainline (Board Walkthrough)

Step 2 / 2

White wins the game instantly!

8. The Trap: Stalemate

Position 8 / 10
Position 8/10 • Starting Position (Black to Move)
This is stalemate (a Draw/tie). It is Black's turn. The Black King is NOT in check, but has no legal moves (g8 and h7 are blocked/controlled by White). Avoid this trap when winning!

Mainline (Board Walkthrough)

Step 2 / 2

Stalemate represents a tie game. If you are winning, always make sure the opponent King has a legal square to go to unless you are giving check!

9. Other Draws & The Clock

Position 9 / 10
Position 9/10 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Draws can also happen by Insufficient Material (like only two Kings left, where checkmate is physically impossible), Threefold Repetition (same position 3 times), or the 50-move rule.

Mainline (Board Walkthrough)

Step 2 / 2

Lastly, the Chess Clock! Each player has a set time (e.g. 10 minutes). If your clock hits zero, you lose on time. Play fast and manage your clock wisely!

10. Special Move: Castling

Position 10 / 10
Position 10/10 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Castling is a special move where your King and Rook move at the same time to tuck the King away safely. The King moves two squares toward the Rook, and the Rook jumps over him. Try Castling kingside by moving the King to g1!

Mainline (1 Moves)

Move 1 / 1 1. O-O

Nice! You successfully castled kingside (O-O). Remember the 3 Castling Rules: 1) Neither piece must have moved before, 2) No pieces can block the path, and 3) You cannot castle out of, through, or into Check!
