Core Lesson Objective: Witness Adolf Anderssen's evergreen combination, featuring a brilliant queen sacrifice and a forcing double checkmate.

The Evergreen Game

Position 1 / 1
Position 1/1 • Starting Position (White to Move)
Welcome to the 'Evergreen Game' (Adolf Anderssen vs. Jean Dufresne, Berlin 1852). Anderssen plays the Evans Gambit (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. b4!?). White sacrifices a wing pawn to deflect Black's bishop, gain a tempo with c3, build a dominant pawn center, and open diagonals. In the final combination, Anderssen plays the quiet move 19. Rad1! and then sacrifices his queen (21. Qxd7+!) to force the king into a mating net.
