Colle vs. O'Hanlon (Nice, 1930): The textbook Greek Gift position from EloClarity Lesson #34. Black's f6-knight defender has been removed, allowing White to launch the historic sacrifice 12. Bxh7+!.

The Legend of Colle vs. O'Hanlon (Nice, 1930)

Dating back to the 17th-century treatises of Gioachino Greco, the Greek Gift sacrifice (Bxh7+) is the most celebrated and lethal attacking motif in chess history.

In our featured instructional master game from EloClarity Lesson #34 (Edgard Colle vs. John O'Hanlon, Nice 1930), Black has just played 11... cxd4, capturing in the center to maintain material equality. Black suffers from King-Safety Tunnel Vision, believing their castled king is completely impregnable because their minor pieces appear clustered defensively.

However, Black's capture fatally overlooked the total absence of their f6-knight anchor, which was exchanged off earlier. White punishes Black's neglect not by routinely recapturing 12. cxd4, but by detonating the king's fortress with the immortal sacrifice: 12. Bxh7+!.

Phase 1: The Bishop Detonation & Queen Infiltration (12. Bxh7+ ... 14. Qh5)

Executing the Greek Gift requires calculating three sequential tactical phases:

1. 12. Bxh7+! Kxh7: White sacrifices a full minor piece to tear away the enemy king's primary pawn shield, dragging the monarch into the open. 2. 13. Ng5+! Kg8: White's knight leaps into g5 with check, protected by the dark-squared bishop on c1. Black's king is forced to retreat to g8 to seek shelter behind the remaining pawns. 3. 14. Qh5!: White swings the queen into the assault, establishing an overwhelming battery against both f7 and h7.

Because Black has no knight on f6, Black is powerless to contest White's queen on the kingside.

Phase 2: The Decisive 16. Re4! Rook Lift Finisher

Black attempts to shield the h7-square by desperately rushing their knight to the defense with 14... Nf6. White calmly breaches the fortress with 15. Qxf7+ Kh8, driving the king into the corner.

Now comes the masterclass move that every student must memorize: the decisive Rook Lift 16. Re4!.

Rather than continuing with single-piece checks, White mobilizes heavy reserves. The rook threatens an immediate, unstoppable checkmate via 17. Rh4+ Nh7 18. Rxh7#. Black is completely paralyzed. Desperate to delay the inevitable, Black captures the rook with 16... Nxe4, but surrendering the defensive knight seals Black's doom.

White uncorks 16. Re4! bringing heavy reserves into the attack. Threatening unstoppable checkmate with 17. Rh4+ Nh7 18. Rxh7#.

Phase 3: The King Hunt to Checkmate (16... Nxe4 ... 20. Qxg7#)

With the defensive pieces eliminated, White delivers a forced, textbook mating combination:

- 17. Qh5+! Kg8 - 18. Qh7+! Kf8 - 19. Qh8+! Ke7 - 20. Qxg7#!

The queen and g5-knight coordinate in absolute harmony, dragging the king from its corner shelter into the open center where it is executed on move 20.

The Three Sacred Pillars: Prerequisite Checklist

Before you ever sacrifice your bishop on h7, you must rigorously verify the Three Sacred Pillars:

1. The Dark-Squared Bishop Pillar: Your bishop on c1 must control the diagonal to support Ng5+ with check. 2. The Infiltration Ray Pillar: The path from d1 to h5 must be unobstructed so your queen can join the assault on the very next turn. 3. The Absent Defender Pillar: Black must have no knight on f6 and no bishop on e7 that can simply capture your g5-knight for free.

If all three pillars are intact, the Greek Gift is not a gamble—it is a mathematically forced win.

🎯 Key Tactical Takeaways

  • ✓ The classical Greek Gift (Bxh7+) detonates the castled king's pawn shield for a forced mating attack.
  • ✓ Study Colle vs. O'Hanlon (1930): 12. Bxh7+! Kxh7 13. Ng5+ Kg8 14. Qh5 Nf6 15. Qxf7+ Kh8 16. Re4! and mate in 4.
  • ✓ Master the 16. Re4! rook lift—bringing heavy reserves into the attack creates unstoppable mating geometry.
  • ✓ Always verify the Three Sacred Pillars: dark-squared c1-bishop support, open d1-h5 queen ray, and no f6-knight defender.
